Thanks very much to all of the participants in the whitewater events. I had my doubts as to whether anyone would want to do the events with the low water, but it was a very respectable turnout. Much thanks to Bob Ward for being the finish line for both races and to Pete Cragg for helping me set up the buoys for the slalom race. Thanks to Steve Daniel for doing the finish timing on the slalom, and thanks to my wife Angelina and to John Bailey for helping me with the Rodeo judging. Last, but not least, thanks to my lovely wife for making the prizes (very nice etched beer glasses).
click "more info" for the results Boatercross - We had six competitors in this mass start, full contact, fastest to the bottom of the rapid race. Skip Morris paddled it in an open canoe and therefore got a nice prize for 1st in his class, and we also had a sit on top and another kayaker that I neglected to get names from. The race was quite exciting among the top 3 finishers. Tanner had a big lead, but Justin and Matt took a different line and passed him up (much to Tanner's dismay). Here are the top 3:
1st - Justin Ceterski
2nd - Matthew Taylor
3rd - Tanner Sowa
Giant Slalom - Because there was no water going around the islands this year we had to improvise. Pete helped me set buoys in eddies on both sides starting about halfway down the rapid. Considering the low water conditions, it seemed to work well. We had a good turnout of 11 boaters, including one sit on top and a surprising 4 open canoes. Again, I was a bit frazzled and unfortunately did not get the names of all the participants, but here are the top finishers in each class and their times.
Men's OC1
1st - Kevin Longin (4:12)
2nd - Skip Morris (4:32)
3rd - Gary Tupa (5:52)
Women's OC1 - 1st - Kathy Cusick (5:32)
Men's Kayak (this one was very close - check out the times)
1st - Travis Cragg (3:11)
2nd - Tanner Sowa (3:16)
3rd - Bruce Trainum (3:21)
Rodeo - This was a difficult one because for the first time (and hopefully last) there was nothing in the rapids that was rodeo-worthy. I wasn't sure there would be a rodeo. There were some surfable waves, but they were all very shallow and small and would have made for a boring rodeo. So with the input of the 3 participants we decided to have a flatwater rodeo. It was really cool and the non-whitewater onlookers were amazed at what these guys were able to do. We also discovered that 2 minutes is a very long time in a flatwater rodeo so we shortened the 2nd round to 1 minute. Here are the results:
1st - Tanner Sowa (with some very entertaining and innovative paddle free moves)
2nd (tie) - Travis Cragg
2nd (tie) - Jake Johnson
Thanks again to everyone who participated and helped. It was a challenge with the low water this year but all in all the competitions were quite fun.
